STUDY OF JEREMIAH

This is a wash of burnt umber on masonite that I'll work on tomorrow with color. I'm going for a different approach on this. The plan is to treat it like a chess game, with deliberate moves that are simple, precise and effective. I'll post the next stage progressively until "checkmate" time.

Sweet Williams Cat - 8" x 12"

This is my friend Bill's cat that acts like a dog. Even though it does'nt chase frisbees or balls, it does come to you when you call and it fetches mice instead. I used large brushes for most of the painting and tried to keep things simple, high keyed and a balance of warm and cool colors. The cat has all these soft edges and a variety of color, and sits in and around remnants of what was in Bill's garage before we tore it down. I like the look of cats as they are always on the lookout, and ready to pounce on something, even though it might take a few days before this happens, they're always ready....

Butterflies in Winter

Fredrick Meijer Gardens and Sculpture park is close to Grand Rapids, Michigan and has an enormous greenhouse that holds thousands of plants. What really brings life to it is all the butterflies that fly around and often land within a few feet of you. Most are exotic species and even though I haven't seem most outside of an Audubon book, there is still the wonder and fascination that takes me back to my childhood when my brothers and I would chase them through the neighborhood, hopping fences, and in fields of wildflowers to catch them. The wings in most species are PURE PIGMENT OF COLOR. Let em fly, they're little angels.

Jay Leno and Lemons

Sometimes the whole day goes by and with all the running, catching up from falling behind, and the rest of the 2-do lists, and its suddenly 10pm. At least the plate is cleared for a full day of painting tomorrow, but I could not let the day end without doing a small painting. I turned to the fridge for someone willing to pose and the lemons were raising their hands. I started painting just as the Tonight show came on and had a thought that lemons, can be comedy fruit. Pucker up Jay!

"Buffalo Rangers" - 8"x10"

This is a study I did in Yellowstone. I plan on doing a large painting of Buffalo and am impressed by the massive size and the feeling that they are part of the earth, as if a huge rock formation is covered with fur.
